Claudia Elliott is a Spanish teacher in Jacksonville, Florida. She has been teaching Spanish since 2005 and is currently teaching Spanish 1, Spanish 3 IB, and AP Spanish Language and Culture.
In recent years she has implemented dramatic changes to her teaching practices to make her class more comprehensible, communicative, and community-driven. Claudia has shared her ideas and experiences with world language educators in different forums and conferences. Claudia is very passionate about incorporating acquisition-driven instruction into her class while building a strong community with her students.
Claudia is also the founder of Growing With Proficiency where she helps World Language teachers to build comprehensible and communicative-driven classes.

In this session, Claudia will provide teachers with effective strategies to foster connections and create an inclusive learning environment in the world language classroom. By utilizing language as a tool to discover who our learners are, they will feel seen and heard, thereby enhancing their engagement and learning outcomes. The session will focus on empowering teachers to guide students in exploring their identity and talents through language using specific strategies, fostering a sense of belonging and personal growth.

This keynote address seeks to inspire and validate world language teachers in the significance of their work, providing them with an additional reason to support their teaching beyond words. The address emphasizes that the role of language teachers extends beyond teaching vocabulary and grammar. It highlights the importance of facilitating communication and cultural exploration, allowing students to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for different cultures while simultaneously discovering more about themselves.
In this address, teachers will be motivated to create transformative learning experiences that transcend traditional language instruction. They will gain specific strategies and tools that enable them to reflect these principles in their daily practices.
Saturday Workshop, 09:15-12:15 - A Scope and Sequence that Goes Beyond Words: Fostering Communication, Authenticity and Equitable Student Outcomes in the Language Classroom
In this session, Claudia will provide participants with a comprehensive framework for developing a more relevant, authentic, and equitable language classroom that focuses on communication. By emphasizing authenticity and prioritizing students' experiences and relevant messages, teachers can create a learning environment that promotes meaningful language use, authentic communication and connections. Participants will explore strategies to have a different approach into their curriculum design. The workshop will focus on practical implementation, allowing teachers to enhance their instructional practices and support equitable student outcomes.
