2014 LFLTA Keynote Speaker
Valérie Thériez
LFLTA invited Valérie Thériez to give the Keynote Address at this year’s conference. Valérie was the recipient of LFLTA’s 2013 Teacher of the Year Award and represented Louisiana in SCOLT’s 2014 Teacher of the Year program in Memphis, Tennessee. She was awarded the 2014 Teacher of the Year by Cecilia Primary School in St. Martin Parish where she has taught 1st grade French immersion for the past four years. In 2011 Valérie was awarded the Region IV Teacher of the Year by the Louisiana Association of Computer Using Educators (LACUE).
Valérie is originally from Thugny-Trugny, a small village found in the Champagne-Ardenne region of northern France. Valérie studied at l’Université de Reims where she received a degree in English in 1987. Her first post in teaching was at Ecole Normale de Filles, an elementary school in Charleville-Mézières, France.
After eleven years of teaching elementary school in France, she was ready to see where teaching could take her. In 1999 Valérie applied for a teaching position in Louisiana through CODOFIL and was accepted. She began the first Louisiana chapter of her life at Cecilia Primary as a 1st grade immersion teacher. At the conclusion of her three year contract with Louisiana through CODOFIL, she applied for an extension which she received.
After her fourth year at Cecilia Primary, Valérie applied for another extension and moved to Daspit Elementary in New Iberia, Louisiana in 2004 where she taught and served as Technology Coordinator until 2008.
In 2009 Valérie returned to France and taught for a year in an elementary school near her home town of Rethel. Although physically she was in France, she felt as though her heart was still in Louisiana. So she started the application process again in 2009. The following year, Valérie was back and her second chapter in Louisiana began.
